The Department of Earth Sciences offers programs leading to M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees. Research topics span a wide range of field and laboratory-based disciplines in Geology, Geophysics, Geochemistry and Environmental Geoscience. Projects may involve collaboration with the Departments of Applied Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Geography, Physics & Astronomy, and Civil and Environmental Engineering, and the collaborative programs in Planetary Science and Environment & Sustainability. Extensive use is also made of the Surface Science Westernfacilities and in collaboration with the Faculty of Science. Graduate degrees are administered by the School of Graduate & Postdoctoral Studies.

The Department has interests in basin analysis, computer-assisted image analysis, contaminant transport, crustal seismology, teleseismic studies of the lithosphere, seismic hazard studies, environmental earth sciences, experimental high pressure/high temperature studies, exploration geophysics, geomicrobiology, glacial geology, hydrogeology, mantle dynamics and plate tectonics, low-temperature geochemistry, mineral deposits, mineral chemistry & physics, materials science, paleontology, petrology, petroleum geology, Precambrian geology, sedimentology, sequence stratigraphy, spectral analysis, stable isotope geochemistry, planetary science and volcanology.
